In 1992, Wilfried Schmidt presented the prototype of a gearless hub dynamo that produced the standard 3 watts of power, yet weighs only slightly more than a bottle dynamo and a good front hub combined. The first hub dynamo components were manufactured in his parents' garage in Ulm.

In 1995, the company relocated to Tübingen. On the ground floor of two original co-operative building projects, Schmidt hub dynamos are made with a lot of manual work and care. Presently, there are 28 employees.

Our goal is to bring the bike forward as means of transport in everyday life and travel. Our components make bicycle lighting reliable, low maintenance, and durable, and cost the user as little time and effort as possible.

In production, we strive for economical use of resources and short transport distances. Where possible, our suppliers are within cycling distance. The bicycle is used whenever practicable as a vehicle for semi-finished products.
